Colley Field – Two home runs, a triple, and two doubles were part of a 13-hit barrage by Henrico (2-4; 1-1) as the “Warriors” notched their first Capital District win of the year over Highland Springs (1-5; 0-1). The 13-0 victory was possible because of the joint two-hit shut out pitching performance of starter Michael Mansfield and reliever Paul Bateera.
“District wins are critical and the team put it all together at the right time tonight with powerful hitting, pin-point pitching, and solid defense,” said Henrico head coach Ken Schrad. “It was another positive sign that this young team has some talent,” he added. “We, as a coaching staff, just need to keep bringing it along and have enough patience to let it develop game-by-game.”
The “Springers” Monte Davis led off the game with a double to left center field. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Mansfield struck out the next two batters to leave him stranded there.
In the bottom of the first, Bateera reached on an error. After stealing second base, Landon Prentiss followed with an RBI triple to deep right center field. Mansfield hit a towering fly that carried over the right field fence for a two-run home run.
Michael Mansfield hits a 2-run homer in the first inning.
The second inning for Henrico was much like the first. Bateera led off with a single. Prentiss screamed a line drive to the deepest part of Colley Field, the 400 foot sign in center field. The fastest “Warrior” on the team turned it into an inside the park home run, scoring before the relay throw could even reach home plate. Mansfield followed with a double. Josh Beales entered to run for Mansfield. He scored on a double by Cody Spain.
The score was 6-0.
Highland Springs used a weak infield hit, a steal and a walk to put runners on base in the top of the third. A fielder’s choice ground out left runners on the corners. The inning ended when Andrew Props threw out the runner trying to steal second base.
Henrico went down quietly in the bottom of the third. Bateera came on in relief of Mansfield to pitch the top of the fourth. He struck out the side.
The bottom of the fourth was the big inning for Henrico. Eleven batters came to the plate. Seven of them scored.
Prentiss and Mansfield each singled. Props walked to load the bases. Spain singled for an RBI. Nick Toombs followed with a smash that got past the “Springers” shortstop scoring another run. Nick Holmes singled to score Treyvon Robinson who was running for Props. Kyle Logan walked with the bases loaded scoring Spain. Toombs scored on a passed ball. Holmes scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Doggett. Logan scored the seventh run on a single by Bateera. Henrico now led 13-0.
Bateera struck out the three batters he faced in the top of the fifth to end the game. In two innings, he faced six and struck out six.
Henrico has three-games to play during Spring Break Week. The “Warriors” will participate in the Lancer Tournament at Manchester High School. On Saturday, Henrico plays Clover Hill at 4pm. On Monday at 4pm, its tourney host Manchester. On Tuesday at 1pm, the opponent is J.R. Tucker.
