TUPELO – It was frigid, and it was a win.

The Tupelo Golden Wave opened its 2012 baseball season Friday with a solid 6-2 victory over the Lafayette Commodores in action in the Tupelo Classic.

“It’s a win, that’s what we were after,” Tupelo coach Gary Enis said. “We had some big hits to drive in some runs, and what can you say about our pitching.”

Tupelo’s effort on the mound was certainly one of the highlights of the evening, beginning with Ben Aldridge. The senior hurled 5 2/3 innings, scattering two hits in the process.

Then in relief was sophomore Hudson Roy, who struck out four in his time on the mound.

“I pitched all right, and it was good to be back on the field,” Aldridge said. “I think we played well, and we’re going to surprise some people.”

The Tupelo offense was able to get runners on base, then combined that with timely hitting, beginning in the bottom of the second inning. There, three Tupelo batters were hit to load the bases, resulting in a three-run frame that included an RBI single by Hunter Allred.

The Wave then added solo runs in each of the third, fourth, and sixth innings, with RBI hits by junior Kyle Cofer and senior McKamy Smith.

“We were glad just to be playing, like other teams today,” Enis said. “Aldridge is still not where we want him to be, but he still got some big outs tonight.

“Roy was a little nervous at first, but he stayed around the strike zone and got outs.”

Lafayette bagged solo runs in the third and fifth innings.

Tyler Mize led off the third with a triple for the Commodores, scoring on a sacrifice fly. Lafayette then added its other run in the fifth on a wild-pitch third strike, and an error.

The classic schedule continues today with four games, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tupelo plays Saltillo at 6 p.m.
